10,000 Nigerians benefit from China–Nigeria exchange programmes

More than 10,000 Nigerians across various sectors of the economy have benefitted from exchange and training programmes sponsored by the Chinese government, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has said.

The envoy disclosed this on Friday in Abuja at the maiden Annual China–Nigeria Government Exchange Programme Alumni Reunion Gala.

Yu said the initiative had helped to build individual capacity, strengthen institutional effectiveness and support Nigeria’s national development drive.

He explained that the reunion was designed to sustain engagement among programme alumni while creating a platform for collaboration, idea-sharing and sustained contributions to bilateral relations.

“The purpose of tonight’s gathering is to allow our alumni to stay connected, exchange ideas, and contribute meaningfully to China–Nigeria relations,” he said.

The ambassador noted that China had, over the years, provided training opportunities in key areas such as governance, poverty reduction, manufacturing, agriculture, public health, trade, investment, science, technology, innovation, the blue economy and the digital economy.

According to him, the programmes have not only enhanced individual competencies but also contributed significantly to Nigeria’s economic and social advancement.

Yu added that beneficiaries of the exchange programmes were spread across major cities including Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan and Maiduguri, underscoring the nationwide reach of the initiative.

He described Nigeria and China as “natural partners” with more than 50 years of growing diplomatic relations, marked by mutual support on core national interests.

As an example, the ambassador cited China’s opposition to possible external military threats against Nigeria, as well as its backing of Nigeria’s global aspirations, including support for its return to the International Maritime Organisation and bid to join the G20.

On Nigeria’s foreign policy position, Yu said the Federal Government remained committed to the One-China principle, which recognises only one indivisible China.

He disclosed that bilateral trade between both countries exceeded $22bn in 2025, while China’s direct investment in Nigeria rose by 130 per cent and Nigeria’s exports to China increased by over 200 per cent.

The ambassador also announced China’s zero-tariff policy on 100 per cent of products from all 53 African countries, including Nigeria.

“China’s today is Nigeria’s tomorrow,” he said, describing China as Nigeria’s “most important, reliable and trustworthy partner”.

Yu reaffirmed China’s willingness to deepen cooperation with Nigeria in pursuit of sustainable social and economic development.

Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Social Development Secretariat, Olubunmi Olowookere, commended the programme, noting that it had supported her mandates in social welfare, poverty alleviation and community development.
