56-year-old Australian grandmother welcomes twins with Nigerian husband

Angela Peters, a 56-year-old Australian grandmother of 12 and mother of five, has shared the extraordinary story of how she gave birth to twin girls with her 39-year-old Nigerian husband, Bright.

Speaking in an interview with The Sun UK, Peters recalled meeting Bright in 2020 via a dating app. Interestingly, her initial conversation was with his older brother Emeka, who was living in Senegal at the time. But when Emeka sent a family photo, Peters’ attention was immediately drawn to Bright.

“It felt like a lightning bolt. I just knew he was the one,” she said.

According to her, at the time, Bright was working as a cook in South Africa, while Peters lived in Australia.

After nine months of online communication, she flew to Nigeria in February 2021 to meet him. Just nine days after arriving, the couple tied the knot in a quiet civil ceremony in Lagos.

“When I called my children to tell them I’d gotten married, they were horrified,” she recalled. “But I knew once they met Bright, they’d come around.”

Peters, who had been divorced since 2019, said she had never expected to have more children.

However, seeing Bright’s deep desire to become a father sparked a change of heart.

“At first, I told him I was going through perimenopause and couldn’t have children anymore,” she explained.

“But he smiled and told me not to worry—he believed we’d have twin girls one day.”

Due to Australia’s legal restrictions on IVF for women over 52, Peters explored fertility options in Nigeria, where doctors were open to proceeding despite her age.

The couple eventually began IVF treatment with donor eggs and Bright’s sperm.

In January 2023, she returned to Nigeria to begin the process, the same year, Peters discovered she was pregnant with twins just as her husband had predicted.

The couple welcomed their daughters, Khorus and Knowyn, in August 2024.

Despite concerns about her age and risks involved, Peters described the pregnancy as her easiest yet. With the encouragement of her daughters, she documented the journey on TikTok, inspiring thousands of women around the world.

Her 28-year-old daughter, Deina, admitted she was initially skeptical. “I thought Bright might be a scammer, and I was shocked when Mum told me they were married and asked me to be their surrogate. But once I saw how happy she was, and how well she handled the pregnancy, I couldn’t help but admire her.”

Peters said her new babies have brought her family closer and urged other older women not to give up on motherhood if it’s something they truly desire.

“To any woman dreaming of becoming a mother later in life—don’t lose hope,” she said.
