Three Nigerian-eligible players among list released by Arsenal

Arsenal Football Club has officially announced the list of players who will be departing the club following the end of the 2024/2025 season.

In a statement published on the club’s official website, twenty players were confirmed to be leaving, including three individuals eligible to represent Nigeria at international level.

The players of Nigerian descent set to leave the North London side are forward Nathan Butler Oyedeji, goalkeeper Brian Okonkwo, and midfielder Zacariah Shuaib.

Butler Oyedeji, who joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of eight, rose through the youth ranks to eventually make his first team debut in a UEFA Champions League fixture against Dinamo Zagreb.

He also made his Premier League debut in April, coming off the bench in a match against Ipswich Town. During his time at the club, he had loan spells with Accrington Stanley and Cheltenham Town.

Goalkeeper Brian Okonkwo, the younger brother of Wrexham’s Arthur Okonkwo, spent time on loan at several non-league sides including Hitchin Town, Leatherhead and Cheshunt.

While he did not make an appearance for Arsenal’s senior team, he was involved in training sessions with the first team on multiple occasions.

Midfielder Zacariah Shuaib began his football development at the age of seven with Chiswick Youth.

He later featured for Hanwell FC, Focus Football, London Colney Colts, and Tottenham Hotspur before securing a move to Arsenal’s Hale End Academy in March 2022.

Shuaib, who is also eligible to represent England, Spain and India, spent part of the past season training with Brighton and Hove Albion as well as Spanish side Real Sociedad.

Both Okonkwo and Shuaib are set to depart officially when their contracts expire on June 30, 2025.
