Nigerian academic wins $600,000 U.S research grant

A graduate of Fountain University, Osogbo, Dr. Habeeb Olufowobi, has been awarded a $600,000 research grant by the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his groundbreaking work on cybersecurity for autonomous vehicles.

Dr. Olufowobi, who currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, received the competitive Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award widely regarded as the NSF’s most prestigious recognition for early career researchers.

Reacting to the news, the management of Fountain University commended Dr. Olufowobi for his academic excellence and innovation, describing the recognition as a proud moment for the institution.

In a statement by the Institution’s Public Relations Officer, Taoheed Alimi, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olayinka Ramota Karim, praised the alumnus for exemplifying the values of hard work, innovation, and global relevance that the university instills in its students.

“We are immensely proud of Dr. Olufowobi’s accomplishment. His recognition by the U.S. National Science Foundation is a testament to the quality of minds nurtured at Fountain University,” she said.

“The CAREER Award supports faculty who demonstrate potential for leadership in research and education. Dr. Olufowobi’s project aims to create integrated solutions that allow autonomous vehicles to detect, withstand, and recover from cyber threats helping to ensure safer adoption of self-driving technologies.”
