Tragedy as Nigerian Master’s student dies in UK

A Nigerian postgraduate student in the United Kingdom, identified simply as Hammed, has died following a sudden deterioration linked to advanced cancer.

His passing was disclosed through a GoFundMe campaign created by Mariam Ajibola and Mohammed Chaanda on behalf of Piety Mosque.

The fundraiser, which originally sought assistance for his medical treatment, was later adjusted to appeal for support toward his burial.

According to the organisers, Hammed, a 36-year-old Lagos resident from Ayete in Oyo State, travelled to the UK in September last year to begin a Master’s programme in Business and Management at the University of Plymouth.

Despite being diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year, they said he pushed through the physical and emotional strain to complete his studies.

The appeal described him as “the youngest of four children,” and the cheerful centre of his family, known for his warmth and generosity.

However, his health reportedly declined sharply in recent weeks.

Plans to fly him back to Nigeria were shelved after doctors concluded he was too unstable to travel.

With that option off the table, the organisers turned to the public to help ensure he received a proper burial in the UK.

“We are raising funds to give Hammed a dignified burial,” the statement read, adding that every contribution would lighten the family’s burden.

Although the organisers said £5,000 was needed for a 50-year burial plot and coffin, the campaign had exceeded £6,000 as of Sunday.
