Senator Aniekan Bassey, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), has called for deeper global partnerships and enhanced diplomatic engagement to safeguard Nigerians living abroad.
Speaking at a Committee strategy session, Bassey stressed that Nigeria cannot operate in isolation, especially as migration, global security, foreign employment, cross-border education, and irregular mobility become increasingly complex.
He noted that Nigerians abroad contribute significantly to the country’s economy through remittances, investments, professional networks, and knowledge transfer, making their protection a national priority.
Bassey highlighted the challenges many Nigerians face overseas, including immigration hurdles, workplace discrimination, limited legal protection, restricted access to consular services, and, in some cases, life-threatening vulnerabilities.
He said that sustained collaboration with foreign governments, international agencies, and diaspora institutions is essential to address these issues effectively.
He revealed that the Committee plans to intensify dialogue with embassies, consulates, global migration bodies, and Nigerian communities abroad.
According to the senator, strengthening global partnerships is not only a diplomatic concern but also a legislative priority that could shape policy reforms, international agreements, and Nigeria’s reputation worldwide.
He assured that the Committee, under his leadership, will continue to champion initiatives that demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to protecting its citizens wherever they reside.
