British-Nigerian inventor unveils patented modular handbag system

British-Nigerian designer, Shina Xifregas, has partnered with digital news platform UrbanGeekz to showcase his innovative modular handbag system, Building Bags®, which allows users to assemble multiple clutch handbags into a single, customizable piece.

The system, which Xifregas patented, enables components to be swapped in minutes, offering flexibility in size, style, and design.

Each bag is fully functional on its own, giving users the option to carry them separately or combined as needed.

“Most handbags give you one shape, one look, and one purpose. Whereas what I’m bringing to the market is a bag that can change size and look repeatedly,” Xifregas said.

The invention is currently being funded through a Kickstarter campaign to support early production and manufacturing.

Xifregas holds patent rights for the system in the UK, Italy, France, and China, giving him exclusivity in key consumer markets.

He described the concept as the first of its kind globally, turning multiple standalone handbags into a single, versatile piece.

UrbanGeekz CEO Kunbi Tinuoye said the collaboration aims to highlight “bold ideas and the talented founders driving them forward,” noting the system introduces a new approach to design, fashion, and engineering.

Born in the UK, Xifregas spent part of his childhood in Nigeria before returning to Britain.

His experiences in both countries, along with seven years in Japan studying business and culture, influenced the brand’s Japanese-inspired aesthetic and innovative approach.

The Kickstarter campaign ends in the coming days, offering early supporters the chance to purchase single bags or multi-piece sets.

Xifregas said funds raised will drive production and help establish a scalable, IP-protected fashion ecosystem.
