UK Police seek family of injured Nigerian student, Uchechukwu Kanu

Police in Leicestershire, United Kingdom, have launched a public appeal to trace the family of a 21-year-old Nigerian student, Uchechukwu Haniel Kanu, who was discovered with severe injuries on a street in September.

A post shared on X revealed that Mr Kanu, who is in the UK on a student visa, was assaulted in September and has remained hospitalised in serious but stable condition.

According to the police, he was found injured on Melton Road in Thurmaston on September 12, after officers responded to reports of damaged vehicles in the area.

Officials later confirmed that the young man, who was living in the Riverside area of Leicester before the incident, had no identified relatives in the UK, prompting efforts to contact his family.

“Since the incident in September, we have carried out a number of inquiries, both here and in Nigeria, to locate Mr Kanu’s family,” Detective Con Kevin Sharkey said, according to the BBC. “Those inquiries have proved negative, and we now ask for the public’s help to trace his family or anyone who may know him.”

The officer added, “If you are Mr Kanu’s family and have been trying to contact him in the last few months, then please contact us so we can make arrangements for you to be put in touch with his medical team.”

Police urged anyone with information about Mr Kanu’s relatives to reach out to DC 2137 Sharkey on 101 or via the Leicestershire Police website, quoting crime number 25*539400.

Five men, aged 24, 26, 34, 37 and 53, were arrested in connection with the incident but have since been released pending further investigations.
