33-year-old Nigerian becomes first to head UK Law Society

A 33-year-old Nigerian lawyer, Chimdinma Nwaigwe, has made history in the United Kingdom after being inaugurated as President of the Leicestershire Law Society.

Nwaigwe, who was born and educated in Nigeria, is the first Nigerian to lead any Law Society in the UK and the youngest president in the 166-year history of the Leicestershire Law Society.

She was born in Kaduna and graduated from the University of Abuja before representing Nigeria at the M. Brown International Client Consultation and Counselling Competition in the United States in 2015, where the country placed second globally.

The feat earned her a partial scholarship to the Nigerian Law School, and she was called to the Bar in 2016 before completing her National Youth Service Corps in 2017.

Nwaigwe relocated to the UK in 2019, requalified, and became a Solicitor of England and Wales in 2020. She currently practises as a real estate solicitor in Leicester.

She now leads the Leicestershire Law Society, founded in 1860, which has over 800 members, and was recently honoured by the British Nigeria Law Forum for her achievements in the UK legal profession.

At her inauguration, she outlined her vision for inclusive leadership, saying, “Let us walk this journey together, building a Society where well-being is a shared value, every voice matters, and our diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated.”
