Nigerian expatriate demands retraction of viral claims about rapist’s nationality
A Nigerian living abroad has condemned as “false and misleading” a viral social media post that identified a convicted rapist sentenced at Swindon Crown Court as a Nigerian citizen.
Benjamin Kuti, popularly known as Oluomo of Derby, while responding to claims made by Peter Lloyd on X, formerly Twitter, stated categorically that there was no evidence linking the convicted sex offender to Nigeria, describing the allegations as irresponsible and harmful to the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom.
Lloyd had posted that Abdul Hamed, described as “a boat migrant from Nigeria,” had been jailed for six years after climbing through a woman’s window and raping her twice while her children were asleep in the next room.
The post claimed the incarceration would cost British taxpayers £250,000 and alleged that no deportation order had been issued.
However, Oluomo swiftly challenged the post, tagging Lloyd’s message with a strongly-worded rebuttal that questioned the veracity of the nationality claim.
“This information is false and misleading. He was sentenced on 11 December 2024, and at no point in any credible or circulated report was he identified as a Nigerian citizen,” Oluomo declared.
He continued: “Continuing to claim that the rapist is Nigerian is completely untrue and irresponsible. This kind of misinformation unfairly targets an entire community and fuels harmful narratives.”
Oluomo demanded the immediate removal of the post, warning that it was spreading misinformation that could damage Nigeria’s reputation and incite prejudice against Nigerians residing in Britain.
“You need to take this post down immediately as it is spreading wrong information,” he insisted.
