Anthony Joshua, the former world heavyweight champion, was discharged from a Lagos hospital on Wednesday after treatment for injuries sustained in a road collision on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two members of his entourage.
Mr. Joshua had been admitted to Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, following Monday’s crash near Makun, authorities said. Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State commissioner for information, said in a statement that doctors had “deemed [Mr. Joshua] clinical fit to recuperate from home.”
The boxer and his mother later visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their respects to the two victims, identified by officials as Kevin Latif Ayodele, Mr. Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach.
Details about the circumstances of the collision remain under investigation.
The Ogun State Police Command said on Tuesday that a tyre blowout appeared to have precipitated the high-speed wreck. But the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), citing a preliminary inquiry, reported that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were likely contributing factors.
Authorities have pledged further forensic work to reconcile the differing accounts.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described chaotic rescue efforts in the immediate aftermath.
The Lexus SUV carrying Mr. Joshua and his companions reportedly struck a stationary truck on the Ibadan-bound carriageway, and first responders pronounced two occupants dead at the scene.
Mr. Joshua sustained injuries that officials described as minor; two other passengers survived.
The crash drew an immediate official response. Ogun State’s governor, Dapo Abiodun, and Lagos State’s governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, both visited the hospital to monitor Mr. Joshua’s condition, according to state statements.
The British High Commission also said it had been informed and was monitoring developments, reflecting Mr. Joshua’s dual profile as an international sporting figure with close ties to his native Ogun State.
Mr. Joshua’s presence in Nigeria had been part of a brief visit that followed an exhibition bout in Miami, where he faced Jake Paul. He maintains strong personal and professional links to Sagamu, Ogun State, and travels frequently between Britain and Nigeria.
The investigation into the collision will examine vehicle forensics, witness testimony and traffic-camera evidence, officials said. Prosecutors and traffic authorities will also review the driver’s conduct and the condition of the vehicles involved.
Authorities have not disclosed whether any charges will be filed.
