New tax reforms favour poor, says Revenue Service

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has said the poor are the biggest beneficiaries of the new tax reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu.

Executive Chairman of the Service, Mr Zacchaeus Adedeji, disclosed this on Sunday during an interview on Arise Television.

He said contrary to public perception, the Federal Government was not increasing the tax burden on citizens, noting that wide-ranging exemptions had been built into the reforms.

According to him, over 95 per cent of poor Nigerians are completely exempted from the new tax measures.

Adedeji explained that the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) on food items was deliberately designed to ease pressure on low-income earners.

He noted that food accounts for about 90 per cent of the disposable income of the poor, making the VAT exemption critical to their welfare.

He added that similar reliefs apply to transportation costs, stressing that, overall, the poor stand to gain the most from the tax reforms.
