Nigerian-American singer wins Grammy Award

Nigerian-American singer, Collins Obinna Chibueze, popularly known as Shaboozey, has won his first Grammy Award at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards held on Sunday in Los Angeles, United States.

Shaboozey clinched the Best Country Duo/Group Performance award for “Amen,” his gospel-tinged country collaboration with American singer Jelly Roll.

The song, featured on Jelly Roll’s album, combines contemporary country sounds with themes of faith, gratitude and redemption.

The victory marks a major milestone for the Woodbridge, Virginia-born artiste of Igbo descent, whose music blends elements of hip-hop, R&B and country.

The award also represents Jelly Roll’s first Grammy win, reflecting the growing acceptance of genre-crossing artistes within the country music space.

Shaboozey received the honour during the Grammy Premiere Ceremony, arriving shortly before the category was announced. He appeared visibly emotional as he delivered his acceptance speech.

After thanking God, the singer dedicated the award to his mother, an immigrant who retired from nursing on the same day after more than 30 years of working multiple jobs to support her family.

He extended the dedication to immigrants across the United States, praising their contributions to culture, music and national development, remarks that drew widespread reactions online.

The ceremony was broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount.
