Nigerian man reported killed fighting for Russia in Ukraine

Reports have surfaced that a Nigerian man has been killed while fighting for Russian forces in the ongoing war against Ukraine.

The development was confirmed on Monday by investigative journalist Jaafar Jaafar and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the incident on social media.

Makama described the death as tragic, revealing that the Nigerian had travelled from Northern Nigeria after leaving behind his family to enlist in the Russian military.

“Sad. He left his family in Northern Nigeria to join Russia’s army to fight Ukraine. He was unfortunately killed on the battlefield,” Makama wrote.

Photographs circulating online reportedly show the deceased with his children, sparking emotional reactions and renewed debate about Nigerians joining foreign conflicts.

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began with Moscow’s full invasion in February 2022, has entered its fourth year, resulting in massive casualties and displacement on both sides.
