Nigerian jailed for using fake ID to work in UK hospital

A UK court has convicted a Nigerian woman, Oluwabunmi Adeleiyi, for fraudulently working as a healthcare support worker in National Health Service facilities using false identification.

Adeleiyi, 30, who was resident in Cardiff on a student visa, was found to have worked at Neath Port Talbot Hospital and the Caswell Clinic in Bridgend with forged documents.

The Cardiff Crown Court heard on Wednesday, February 4, that the defendant, alongside two accomplices, used shared fake identity cards to secure shifts through employment agencies and fraudulently bill the NHS about £16,000 monthly.

According to the prosecution, the scheme went undetected for a period until hospital staff noticed inconsistencies on Adeleiyi’s identification card at the end of a night shift, prompting further scrutiny.

Investigations revealed that Adeleiyi, who lacked the required training in patient restraint, had access to confidential patient records and operated in restricted wards, actions officials warned could have had serious consequences for patient safety.

Adeleiyi pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud by false representation.

The court sentenced her to 10 months’ imprisonment on each count, to run concurrently, but suspended the sentence for two years. She was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service.
