Overstaying your visa affects other Nigerians – US embassy warns

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has raised concerns over the rising cases of visa overstays by Nigerian travellers, warning that such violations could jeopardise future travel opportunities for other citizens.

The mission, in a statement released via its social media platforms, emphasised that adherence to visa regulations remains critical to safeguarding access for Nigerians who travel legitimately for academic pursuits, commerce, and family reunions.

“When Nigerian travellers overstay their visas, it creates complications that can impact the chances of their compatriots. Enhanced compliance is essential to preserve opportunities for students, entrepreneurs, and families who honour their travel commitments,” the embassy stated.

The diplomatic mission further called on members of the public to assist in combating visa-related fraud by reporting suspicious activities to its Fraud Prevention Units operating in both Abuja and Lagos.

Contact details for the units were made available in the statement.

The caution followed sustained attempts by American immigration authorities to address breaches of visa conditions and fraudulent applications, factors that could influence policy decisions and visa approval rates for applicants from countries with high violation records.
