Anxiety is mounting among Nigerians residing in Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar as many seek clarification over possible evacuation plans amid rising tensions in parts of the Middle East.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission disclosed on Tuesday that several Nigerians in the affected countries had reached out to the commission to inquire whether the Federal Government was considering evacuation should the security situation deteriorate.
According to the commission, concerned citizens have been asking about contingency arrangements in the event of further escalation in the region.
The agency, however, stated that it had not received any formal distress calls from Nigerians currently living in Iran, despite the growing apprehension.
It noted that organising an evacuation at this time could prove challenging due to prevailing security concerns and restrictions on international flights in some areas.
The commission explained that any decision to evacuate Nigerians would depend largely on an improvement in security conditions and the lifting of travel limitations.
While assuring that the Federal Government remains committed to safeguarding Nigerians abroad, the commission urged citizens in the affected countries to remain calm, stay in secure locations and maintain regular contact with Nigerian embassies for timely updates and guidance.
