Iran’s Ambassador speaks on condition of Nigerians in Iran

The Ambassador of Iran to Nigeria, Mahdavi Raja, has assured that Nigerians living in the country remain safe despite the rising tensions in the Middle East linked to the ongoing standoff involving United States, Israel and Iran.

Raja gave the assurance stating that there had been no reports of harm to Nigerians residing in major Iranian cities, including Tehran and Qom.

According to the envoy, the safety of foreign residents, including Nigerians, remains a priority for the Iranian government despite the current security situation in the region.

He explained that Iran’s recent actions were strictly defensive measures aimed at safeguarding its territorial integrity and citizens in line with international law.

The ambassador stated that the country’s military operations were directed only at strategic military facilities and were not intended to endanger civilians or foreign nationals living in the country.

Raja also noted that Iran’s response to the crisis was guided by the provisions of Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which recognises the right of countries to defend themselves.

He further disclosed that the escalation in tensions occurred during a significant cultural and religious period in Iran, coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan and the celebration of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year.
