Nigerian emerges first black CEO of global NGO

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has commended the appointment of Nigerian development expert, Thelma Ekiyor-Solanke, as the first Black International Chief Executive Officer of Women for Women International.

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement, described the development as a landmark achievement for Nigeria and the global African diaspora, noting that it reflects the growing influence of Nigerians on the world stage.

Dabiri-Erewa said the appointment represents a defining moment, highlighting the resilience, excellence, and leadership qualities Nigerians continue to demonstrate across various sectors globally.

Ekiyor-Solanke, a renowned social impact leader, is widely recognised for her contributions to economic empowerment, gender advocacy, and sustainable development over the years.

In her new position, she is expected to drive the organisation’s mission of supporting women affected by war and conflict, with a focus on helping them rebuild their lives through access to education, financial inclusion, and community-based support systems.

The commission noted that her emergence signals increased global recognition of Nigerian professionals, particularly in advancing inclusive development initiatives across different regions.

Dabiri-Erewa added that the appointment would serve as an inspiration to young Nigerians, especially women, encouraging them to pursue leadership roles on the global stage.

She further reiterated the commission’s commitment to celebrating Nigerians in the diaspora who are making significant contributions internationally, while also promoting collaboration and recognition of their achievements.
