FG deports US missionary Barber over ‘divisive remarks’

The Federal Government has deported a controversial American missionary, Alex Barber, over statements it said were capable of inciting division and unrest, particularly in Plateau State.

Authorities said the decision followed concerns over his activities in the North-Central region, where some of his comments were alleged to have heightened tensions.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North Central), Abiodun Essiet, confirmed the development during a television interview, stating that Barber had been expelled from the country.

She said the government acted after observing that his remarks were contributing to division, adding that he was no longer in Nigeria.

Essiet also linked his comments to a recent incident in Jos, alleging that violence occurred shortly after one of his speeches, which authorities described as provocative.

Barber, a former American football player turned missionary, had gained attention for humanitarian work in Benue and Plateau states, including rebuilding homes for displaced persons.

His efforts, carried out through his initiative, Building Zion, drew praise from some community leaders and residents who said he brought relief to affected communities.

However, his public statements describing the Middle Belt crisis as organised violence drew criticism, with some stakeholders warning that such narratives could worsen existing tensions.

While supporters defended his advocacy, authorities maintained that his removal was necessary to prevent further division and protect national stability.
