Diaspora group urges Tinubu to act over attacks on Nigerians in South Africa

A diaspora-based group, the Concerned Nigerian Network in Diaspora, has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene to protect Nigerians residing in South Africa amid rising concerns over their safety.

The President of the group, James Erebuoye, made the appeal in a statement issued on Wednesday, urging the administration of President Bola Tinubu to take decisive steps to safeguard citizens abroad.

Erebuoye expressed worry over what he described as increasing cases of harassment and violence against foreigners in South Africa, particularly Nigerians.

He also appealed to the South African authorities to caution their citizens and take concrete measures to end attacks on fellow Africans.

“I was deeply disturbed by a trending video showing a fellow African being assaulted without any justification,” he said.

“Such behaviour reflects a troubling mindset at a time when African nations should be working together for development rather than creating unnecessary conflicts,” he added.

The diaspora leader stressed that acts of violence and intimidation against Africans were unlawful and should not be tolerated under any circumstance.

He called for stronger cooperation among African countries to foster unity, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among citizens.

Erebuoye further urged both the Nigerian and South African governments to intensify diplomatic engagements aimed at addressing the underlying causes of the recurring tensions.

He noted that Nigerians in South Africa have, over time, reported incidents of targeted attacks, looting of businesses, and harassment, often linked to claims that foreigners are responsible for crime or job losses.

The group said the circulation of recent videos showing assaults has heightened anxiety within the diaspora community, sparking renewed concern across the continent.
