The United States Mission in Nigeria has commenced applications for the 2026 edition of the EducationUSA Nigeria Opportunity Fund Programme, offering support to outstanding Nigerian students seeking admission into higher institutions in the United States.
According to a notice issued by the US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, applications opened on June 15 and will close on June 30, 2026.
The initiative, administered through EducationUSA Nigeria under the Public Diplomacy Section of the US Mission, is aimed at helping academically exceptional students with proven leadership qualities gain access to higher education opportunities in the US.
The mission said the programme is designed to expand access to American institutions while strengthening bilateral economic ties and promoting US interests.
It added that the 2026 cohort coincides with the Freedom250 celebration, commemorating 250 years of American leadership, innovation and democratic values.
“Freedom250 marks 250 years of American leadership, innovation and democratic values, and the OFP 2026 cohort will advance these priorities by preparing globally competitive talents aligned with U.S. economic and strategic interests,” the statement noted.
The mission also stated that the programme supports secure and lawful participation in American higher education, stressing the importance of compliance with visa regulations and immigration laws.
According to the statement, participants will be expected to understand and adhere strictly to the proper use of student visas and other immigration requirements.
It disclosed that priority would be given to top-performing students whose academic backgrounds and career aspirations align with key areas of strategic interest to the United States, including Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies.
Under the programme, beneficiaries will receive financial assistance to cover essential application-related expenses, including standardised test fees, application charges and other associated costs.
To qualify, applicants are required to demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, research capability and a clear intention to pursue post-secondary education in the United States.
The mission further stated that applicants must possess notable achievements and show commitment to responsible participation in exchange programmes and full compliance with visa regulations.
It emphasised that beneficiaries would be expected to uphold high standards of integrity, accountability and ethical conduct throughout the programme.
Interested candidates are required to submit completed application forms alongside academic transcripts, personal statements and evidence of leadership, achievements and research capability before the June 30 deadline.
