American-Nigerian designer unveils heritage-inspired Walmart collection

Nigerian multidisciplinary designer, Temi Coker, has launched an 18-piece home décor collection in collaboration with American retail giant, Walmart, celebrating Nigerian heritage through bold colours, textures and patterns.

The collection, released last month, features a range of interior items including throws, rugs, pillows and sculptural vases, each designed with vibrant motifs and tactile finishes inspired by Coker’s upbringing in Lagos.

Several pieces in the collection showcase embroidered and beaded details, with designs reflecting African textile traditions and contemporary aesthetics.

The vases, in particular, draw inspiration from Black cultural expressions such as braids and hairstyles, combining fluid forms with symbolic meaning.

Coker said the designs were influenced by his Nigerian childhood and his desire to reflect cultural identity through everyday objects.

He also noted that the collection pays tribute to both his African roots and his African-American family background.

The collaboration with Walmart was aimed at making culturally inspired design accessible to a wide audience.

Most items in the collection are priced between $15 and $30, with all products, except area rugs, selling for under $40.

Speaking on the partnership, Walmart’s Senior Vice President of Home, Creighton Kiper, said the collaboration aligns with the company’s goal of making stylish, artist-led designs affordable and widely available.

Coker has previously worked with global brands such as Google, Nike, Netflix, Adobe and The New York Times, but said the Walmart project allowed him to bring African-inspired design into more homes.
