Aniekan Bassey condemns anti-Nigerian protest in Ghana

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations, Senator Aniekan Bassey, has condemned the recent anti-Nigerian protest in Ghana, describing it as a threat to regional harmony and the shared values of African unity.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and obtained by Diaspora NG, Senator Bassey reacted to a viral video showing a group of Ghanaians protesting and demanding the expulsion of Nigerians from their country, alleging that Nigerians were engaging in activities deemed unacceptable by local standards.

The lawmaker, who also serves as a member of the 6th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament, said such acts were “deeply disturbing and contrary to the spirit of African brotherhood.”

“We must keep the flame of brotherhood alive. Nigeria and Ghana, as key members of ECOWAS, should be at the forefront of promoting peace, unity, and regional integration as enshrined in the ECOWAS charter,” he said.

Senator Bassey commended the prompt diplomatic efforts made by Nigerian authorities to calm tensions, praising the roles played by the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu.

He also acknowledged the efforts of both the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners in working together to restore peace and understanding between the two nations.

Reassuring Nigerians currently residing in Ghana, the Senator said both governments are actively addressing the matter through official diplomatic channels to ensure the safety and welfare of citizens.

“We stand with every law-abiding Nigerian in Ghana and urge calm as the appropriate diplomatic channels are being effectively explored,” he added.

He called on Nigerians in Ghana to continue to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid any provocative actions or statements that could worsen the situation.

“We must keep the flame of brotherhood alive… Nigeria and Ghana, as key members of ECOWAS, should be at the forefront of promoting peace, unity, and regional integration,” he said.
