Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will spend New Year’s Eve receiving treatment at a top Lagos private hospital as he recuperates from a high-speed crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two of his companions.
A black Lexus conveying Joshua and four others collided with a stationary truck in the Makun area.
Two passengers identified as Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele were pronounced dead at the scene, while Joshua and two other occupants survived and were taken to hospital.
Police investigators said preliminary findings point to a tyre blowout as the likely cause of the collision, which occurred on the Ibadan-bound carriageway.
Officers at the scene described the impact as severe and said a full probe into the circumstances of the crash is under way.
Joshua was admitted to Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, a facility noted for its private care, where medical staff described his condition as stable.
Authorities said he sustained minor injuries; however, hospital sources indicated he would remain under observation for several days as doctors monitor his recovery.
Eyewitnesses and first responders carried out immediate rescue efforts after the smash.
State police and traffic agencies have pledged to release a comprehensive report once forensic and investigative work is complete.
Meanwhile, tributes and messages of concern have poured in online as friends, fans and the sporting community react to the fatalities and Joshua’s condition.
