Atalanta speaks on selling Ademola Lookman to Napoli

Atalanta have dismissed speculation linking Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman with a move to Napoli, insisting the 28-year-old winger is not for sale despite renewed interest from the Italian champions.

Reports had suggested that Napoli were considering a fresh approach for Lookman as they sought to strengthen their squad following a disappointing European campaign.

The Super Eagles attacker had previously been monitored by Napoli during the last transfer window, but talks collapsed as he preferred a switch to Inter Milan at the time.

Atalanta maintained their position, making it clear they would not bolster a domestic rival.

The stance reportedly caused tension, with Lookman briefly distancing himself from first-team activities to push for a move.

His form suffered as a result, with goal contributions and overall performance dipping noticeably.

The situation changed after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 in Morocco, where Lookman regained top form, emerging as one of the tournament’s standout attackers.

His resurgence was further highlighted by winning the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award.

Napoli’s renewed interest in the winger comes as the Naples club looks to reinforce its squad after an early UEFA Champions League exit. Manager Antonio Conte, who has called for reinforcements, is expected to receive backing from the club hierarchy as they attempt to close a nine-point gap to league leaders Inter Milan.

Italian media reports suggest Napoli are exploring a loan deal for Lookman, though alternatives such as Sporting Lisbon’s Alisson Santos and Bayer Leverkusen’s Martin Terrier remain under consideration.

Atalanta president Luca Percassi, however, poured cold water on the rumours, stating that recent transfer activity does not indicate any imminent departure for Lookman. “Ademola is a key part of our project, just like the other senior players in this squad,” he said, emphasising the club’s focus on stability and performance.

Head coach Raffaele Palladino also addressed Lookman’s limited involvement since returning from international duty, explaining it is a precaution to manage his workload and prevent injuries.

For now, Atalanta appear determined to retain their star winger, leaving Napoli to explore alternative options in the transfer market.
