Coscharis boss, Maduka regrets missing Flutterwave investment opportunity

Founder of Coscharis Group, Dr Cosmas Maduka, has expressed regret over missing the opportunity to invest in fintech giant Flutterwave, describing the company’s rise as a testament to Nigerian ingenuity and enterprise.

Maduka spoke at Flutterwave’s 10th anniversary gala held at The Delborough Lagos, where political leaders, captains of industry and entertainment personalities gathered to celebrate the firm’s decade-long journey in the financial technology sector.

Reflecting on the company’s early days, the businessman said he was surprised he was not approached to participate in the venture.

“The only thing that surprises me is how you people bypassed me. There was no opportunity to say, ‘Uncle, can we put money together?’ I don’t like good things passing me by,” he remarked.

He described Flutterwave’s growth as a product of “clear thought and clear mindset,” noting that its global recognition underscores the intellectual and entrepreneurial strength of Nigerians despite prevailing national challenges.

Maduka also commended former President Olusegun Obasanjo for laying what he termed the economic foundation that enabled private enterprise to thrive, stressing that leadership should focus on creating opportunities for citizens to excel.

“Leaders set the foundation and give people opportunity. Once that opportunity exists, Nigerians will prove there is no limitation to what we can achieve,” he said.

Drawing from his personal journey, the Coscharis boss recounted losing his father at a young age and ending his formal education at the primary level. He said he resisted pressure to remain abroad and chose to return to Nigeria to build his business.

“To be a true Nigerian, you must share in her shame and glory,” he added, noting that his company has since expanded internationally, including ventures in Japan.

He advised young Nigerians to look beyond salaried employment, warning that wages alone cannot guarantee lasting prosperity.

“Salary is medicine for poverty; it does not cure it,” he said, urging youths to discover their talents and build enterprises that create value and jobs.

Maduka further praised Flutterwave’s founder and Chief Executive Officer, Olugbenga Agboola, for projecting Nigeria positively on the global stage, and lauded Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for supporting innovation-driven initiatives, adding that tangible results ultimately speak louder than rhetoric.
