Cross River inaugurates first diaspora office, NiDCOM hails milestone

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has applauded Cross River State for setting the pace as the first state in Nigeria to establish a dedicated Diaspora Commission office.

NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made the commendation during a two-day working visit to Calabar, which featured the official inauguration of the Cross River State Diaspora Commission (CRIDCOM) building.

At a meeting with Governor Bassey Edet Otu, Dabiri-Erewa praised the state’s commitment to strengthening ties with its indigenes abroad, describing the initiative as “historic and remarkable.”

“When I saw your diaspora office, I jokingly said NiDCOM’s headquarters could relocate here,” she said, adding that Cross River had taken a giant step in recognizing the role of its citizens abroad in driving development.

Governor Otu, in his remarks, lauded Dabiri-Erewa for her “trailblazing efforts” in changing the global narrative about Nigerians and inspiring the creation of CRIDCOM.

“Prior to your leadership, there was a gap between Nigeria and other nations. Now, that narrative has transformed,” the governor said.

The inauguration ceremony, which held the following day, was attended by the First Lady of Cross River State, Rev. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, alongside commissioners and senior government officials.
