Despite setback, Brou carries Nigeria’s fencing Olympic aspirations

Despite an early exit from the knockout stage of the men’s sabre event at the 23rd African Fencing Championships, Nigeria’s top-ranked fencer, Inkosi Brou, remains optimistic about qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The championship, held from June 25 to 29 at Charterhouse Lagos, was won by Egypt.

Brou, who has gained recognition as Nigeria’s leading fencer across both junior and senior levels, gave a solid performance during the tournament, progressing beyond the group stage against experienced opponents.

Although his run ended sooner than expected, the bronze medallist at the 2025 African Junior Championships said he’s not giving up on his Olympic dreams.

“My goal for the 2028 Olympics is still alive. It’s a gradual process, and I just have to stay consistent.”

Brou, who made history as the first Nigerian to earn a medal at an international fencing competition, acknowledged the demands of international competition and the pressure of Olympic ambitions.

“Travelling and competing at this level is challenging, especially while trying to stay on track for the Olympics,” he noted.

“But with the support I receive from my parents and coaches, I’m managing. I’m hopeful it’ll lead to an Olympic spot.”

As the grandson of the late NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Dora Akunyili, Brou also praised the successful hosting of the African Fencing Championships in Lagos, describing it as a major step forward for the sport in Nigeria.

“Bringing the African Championships to Lagos was significant. It was well put together and shows that Nigeria is ready to host more international fencing competitions,” he said.
