A US-based Nigerian entrepreneur, Dr Odera Ozoka, has emerged as a key figure in strengthening economic ties between Nigeria and East Africa through investment initiatives targeted at women entrepreneurs in Uganda.
Ozoka recently joined campaign activities of Uganda’s Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi, in Northern Uganda, a development seen as reinforcing growing economic cooperation between Nigeria and East African countries.
The businessman, who was appointed by Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement to attract international investors, is directing investments aimed at supporting women-owned businesses, particularly in Northern Uganda.
Speaking in Oyam, Ozoka stressed the importance of cross-border African collaboration, noting that women-led enterprises he visited in Lira demonstrated strong enthusiasm and growth potential.
His involvement has opened new opportunities for Nigerian businesses seeking expansion into East Africa, with his partnership with Minister Amongi facilitating access to programmes funded by Uganda’s National Social Security Fund and the World Bank.
Amongi, who is contesting the Lira City Woman parliamentary seat, praised Ozoka’s role, describing him as a strong advocate of Pan-Africanism whose investment efforts would benefit many women across the region.
The partnership has already produced seed financing schemes, business grants and loan programmes for female entrepreneurs in Northern Uganda, initiatives observers say could serve as models for similar programmes in Nigeria.
Analysts say Ozoka’s activities reflect a growing trend of Nigerian professionals in the diaspora using their global networks to drive economic development across Africa, positioning Nigeria as a strategic partner in emerging African markets.
