Don’t misuse U.S visas – Nigerian govt warns

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a cautionary message to Nigerians planning to travel abroad, especially to the United States, urging them to use their visas responsibly in accordance with U.S. immigration laws.

The agency’s Director-General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement released, stressed that misusing travel documents or engaging in activities outside the scope of one’s visa could lead to serious consequences, including deportation or visa bans.

He emphasized that visa scrutiny does not end upon arrival in the U.S., as authorities there continue to monitor visitors throughout their stay.

“U.S. authorities constantly monitor visa holders. Visas can be revoked, and individuals deported, for breaking immigration rules or any U.S. law,” he stated.

Issa-Onilu further urged travellers to properly declare any excess cash above the permitted threshold and avoid carrying prohibited items in their luggage.

He warned that overstaying or breaching visa conditions could not only result in deportation but might also lead to a lifetime entry ban.

“Such actions could also affect chances for other Nigerians with genuine reasons for travel,” he added.

He also called on Nigerian students in the U.S. to ensure that they renew or adjust their visa status before it expires to avoid running afoul of immigration rules.

The NOA chief cautioned against applying for tourist visas with the sole intent of giving birth in the U.S. to obtain citizenship for their child.

“The United States applies strict screening to prevent security threats while supporting lawful travel under a fair and transparent visa process,” he said.
