Family seeks justice after Nigerian woman killed by bus in Canada

The family of a 49-year-old Nigerian, Omotayo Samuel-Pepple, who died after being hit by a bus in Winnipeg, Canada, has demanded answers over the circumstances of her death.

Samuel-Pepple was reportedly at a bus stop on September 16 when the vehicle veered off and struck her. She was rushed to hospital with multiple fractures and internal injuries. Despite undergoing three surgeries, she later went into cardiac arrest and died.

Her sister, Mary Oloyede, said the family has been left in the dark.

“I would want to know if the driver was impaired. What actually happened? I know the police are still doing their investigation, but we are hoping there will be more information as time goes by,” she said.

She expressed concern over the delay in communication, noting that the family was informed about the incident eight hours after it happened.

“She was still conscious, she was still communicating at the scene. Even if I was not there presently, at least I would have gotten a friend or, you know, a church member. I should have notified people around her so that they get to the hospital, but nobody contacted me,” Oloyede said.

Samuel-Pepple relocated to Canada in 2024 to study human resource management at the University of Manitoba. She had planned to bring her husband and three children, aged 14, 17, and 21, to join her before the tragedy struck.

Her sister urged authorities to ensure accountability and appealed to members of the public with dashcam footage or relevant information to assist investigators.
