FG repatriates 1,230 stranded Nigerians from Niger Republic

The Federal Government has evacuated no fewer than 1,230 stranded Nigerians from Niger Republic, reaffirming its commitment to the protection and welfare of citizens abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that the evacuation exercise, coordinated in collaboration with local and international partners, saw the voluntary return of the affected nationals in two batches.

According to the ministry, 708 returnees arrived on March 23, 2026, while another 522 were brought back on March 29, 2026.

It noted that the operation was carried out with the support of the International Organization for Migration, whose logistical assistance ensured a smooth and orderly process.

Upon arrival in Kano State, the evacuees were received by a multi-agency team comprising officials of the National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, National Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Other agencies present included the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, alongside representatives of the Kano and Katsina State governments.

The ministry said the coordinated reception underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration in addressing humanitarian situations.

It added that the returnees were profiled on arrival to ensure proper documentation before being moved to temporary accommodation at the Immigration Training School, Kano, where they were provided with meals, medical care and other basic necessities.

Following the completion of necessary procedures, the evacuees were discharged and reunited with their families.

The ministry described the exercise as part of the government’s broader responsibility to safeguard Nigerians abroad, noting that it would continue to monitor developments in the region and engage relevant authorities to ensure citizens’ safety.

It also expressed appreciation to the government of Niger Republic for its cooperation, describing the gesture as a reflection of strong bilateral relations.

The ministry further commended international partners, particularly the International Organization for Migration and the International Committee of the Red Cross, for their contributions to the success of the operation.

Nigerians residing abroad were advised to remain law-abiding, comply with the laws of their host countries and maintain regular contact with Nigerian diplomatic missions, while also registering with embassies to enable prompt assistance during emergencies.
