Former world junior welterweight champion Amir Khan has officially announced his latest venture in the sport of boxing, confirming a move into promotion with a landmark event planned for Lagos, Nigeria later this year.
The British-Pakistani superstar, who is also the CEO of AK Promotions, has teamed up with Nigerian-based Balmoral Group Promotions to co-promote what is being billed as a “historic” night of championship boxing.
Billed for Wednesday, October 1st, Nigerian Independence Day, the event aims to showcase both local Nigerian talent and international fighters on a major platform, bringing world-class boxing to the heart of Africa.
“I’m thrilled to bring world-class boxing and the world’s eyes onto Nigeria for the first time,” Khan, who hung up his gloves in 2022 after a defeat to Kell Brook, said.
“This event is about more than just fights — it’s about inspiring a new generation and showcasing the heart and skill of Nigerian boxers alongside international stars.
Dr. Ezekiel Adamu, CEO of Balmoral Group Promotions, added: “This historic fight night on Nigerian Independence Day marks a monumental moment for African boxing. We are proud to partner with AK Promotions to showcase Nigeria’s immense talent and passion to the world, celebrating our heritage and potential on a global stage.”
The event will feature former WBA light-heavyweight champion Rocky Fielding, who returns from a two-year hiatus to face cruiserweight contender Brandon Glanton. Fielding, 38, hasn’t fought since a devastating 2022 loss to Dan Azeez, which itself came four years after his defeat to superstar ‘Saul’ Alvarez.
Azeez (21-2-1, 13 KOs), who has Nigerian heritage, will also look to get back to winning ways on the undercard.
“Fighting in Nigeria on Independence Day is a dream come true. This is for my heritage, my people, and my pride” Azeez said.
“I’m ready to put on a show and honor Nigeria with every punch I throw.”
