Arsenal winger, Bukayo Saka, has reaffirmed his strong emotional connection to Nigeria, saying his heritage remains central to who he is despite being born and raised in England.
Saka, who featured for England across all youth levels before committing to the Three Lions, was once a top target for the Nigeria Football Federation as they attempted to convince him to play for the Super Eagles.
The 24-year-old has long embraced his Nigerian background, crediting it for shaping his values and worldview even as his football career progressed in England.
His bond with Nigeria has also been reflected in his philanthropy. Before the 2022 World Cup, Saka partnered with the children’s charity BigShoe to sponsor 120 surgeries for underprivileged children in Kano.
The medical procedures addressed severe health challenges, including hernias and brain tumours, offering renewed hope to many families in northern Nigeria.
Saka has repeatedly praised his parents for instilling cultural pride and discipline.
In a recent BBC interview, he said: “My name is Bukayo Moses Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka. I am very proud of it (my Nigerian roots).
“Both my parents grew up in Nigeria, so many of their values have been instilled in me.”
