JUST IN: Missing UK-based Nigerian student now in contact with family — Community leader

A Nigerian community leader in the United Kingdom, known as the Oluomo of Derby, has confirmed that 21-year-old student, Uchechukwu Haniel Kanu, is now back in touch with his family after weeks of public appeals by Leicestershire Police.

Diaspora NG had reported earlier that UK authorities launched a search for Mr Kanu’s relatives after he was found with severe injuries on Melton Road in Thurmaston on September 12.

Police said the young man, who lives in Leicester on a student visa, had remained hospitalised in serious but stable condition, with no identified family in the UK.

Leicestershire Police explained that investigators had carried out extensive inquiries in Britain and Nigeria to trace his relatives, before calling on the public for assistance.

Five men were arrested in connection with the incident but were later released pending further investigation.

Providing an update on X, Oluomo of Derby expressed gratitude to the public and the police for their efforts in locating Mr Kanu’s family.

“We’re truly grateful to everyone who helped make this possible, and thank you for all the retweets, messages, and support.”

“A big thank you to @leicspolice and the Nigerian community in the UK deeply appreciates your assistance.”

“We’re also grateful that Uchechukwu Haniel Kanu is safely back in touch with his family.”

He added that the development underscored the value of unity within the Nigerian diaspora.

“This reminds us of how important it is to stay connected and remain part of a strong Nigerian community in the diaspora.

“Together, we can make a real difference.”
