JUST IN: Trump recalls Nigeria ambassador, 29 others

The administration of United States President Donald Trump has recalled the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr., alongside 29 other career diplomats serving as ambassadors and senior embassy officials across different countries.

Mills, who was appointed on July 25, 2024, is among mission chiefs whose tenures are being brought to an end as Washington moves to realign its diplomatic representation abroad.

Diaspora NG had reported that 13 African countries were affected by the decision, which is part of broader efforts by the US government to reshape its diplomatic posture with personnel considered fully aligned with President Trump’s “America First” policy agenda.

The Associated Press reported that chiefs of mission in at least 29 countries were informed last week that their postings would terminate in January, citing two State Department officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal personnel decisions.

According to the report, the affected diplomats were appointed during the administration of former President Joe Biden but had initially survived an earlier purge in the early months of Trump’s second term, which largely targeted political appointees.
