King Charles hosts Nigerian diaspora ahead of Tinubu’s UK visit

King Charles III on Thursday hosted a reception for Nigerians living in the United Kingdom, a grand prelude to President Bola Tinubu’s historic state visit next week.

The event celebrated Nigerian excellence with the aroma of party jollof and the rhythms of the Dele Sosimi Afrobeats Orchestra.

Photos shared by the Royal Family showed the King in high spirits as he engaged warmly with members of the Nigerian community.

“It was a wonderful evening,” the Palace said in an official statement, expressing gratitude to all who attended.

The gathering brought together Nigerians from various professions, including doctors, nurses, tech entrepreneurs, and musicians, showcasing the “crème de la crème” of the diaspora.

The event aimed to honour Nigerians who contribute significantly to life in the UK.

The reception also underscored the priorities of the upcoming visit, which will include discussions on trade, security, and the rising trend of skilled Nigerians relocating to the UK.

Guests were treated to the iconic African dish, Jollof rice, while the Afrobeats Orchestra provided live music, creating a festive atmosphere that highlighted the richness of Nigerian culture.

Nigeria, a member of the Commonwealth, maintains a close relationship with the British monarchy, though the King has no ruling authority in the country.

The historical ties between Nigeria and the British Crown date back to the 1800s, beginning with trade and later formal colonial rule, culminating in Nigeria’s independence in 1960 after decades of nationalist movements.

The Palace reception symbolises a modern friendship between the two nations, recognising the contributions of Nigerians abroad and setting the stage for discussions that could deepen diplomatic and economic ties.
