Greek-Nigerian NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has weighed in on football’s most enduring debate, revealing that Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo is his greatest player of all time.
The conversation over football’s GOAT has spanned generations. While older fans often champion legends such as Pelé and Diego Maradona, the modern era has largely revolved around two icons Ronaldo and Argentina’s talisman, Lionel Messi.
Both players have dominated global football for nearly two decades, setting extraordinary records and collecting major honours for club and country. Their contrasting styles and personalities have fuelled passionate debates among supporters worldwide.
Antetokounmpo, who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks, acknowledged Messi’s exceptional talent but admitted he feels a stronger personal connection to Ronaldo’s mindset and discipline.
“It’s like asking me to choose between Jordan and LeBron,” the basketball star said. “If I say Messi, it’s going to cause chaos here.”
He described Messi as “pure talent” who has maintained elite performance levels through hard work and dedication, adding that the Argentine could well be regarded as the greatest ever.
However, Antetokounmpo said he relates more to Ronaldo’s approach to professionalism, pointing to his physical conditioning, relentless work ethic and longevity at the highest level.
“I relate more to hard work, discipline, taking care of your body and being consistent for many years. Cristiano is 41 and still playing at a high level. My mentality is closer to Cristiano Ronaldo’s,” he said.
Despite choosing Ronaldo as his personal GOAT, Antetokounmpo stressed that both players have achieved extraordinary feats, noting their Ballon d’Or titles, Champions League triumphs and World Cup success.
“Once you reach Messi or Ronaldo’s level, you’ve already won,” he added.
The debate, however, shows no sign of ending anytime soon.
