Mo Abudu, Funke Akindele named among Hollywood’s most influential women

Two of Nigeria’s most prominent figures in the film industry, Mo Abudu and Funke Akindele, have earned international recognition with their inclusion in The Hollywood Reporter’s prestigious list of the “Most Influential Women in International Film.”

The renowned American magazine spotlighted 46 outstanding women from around the world for their significant contributions to the global film landscape.

In the feature released on Friday, May 9, The Hollywood Reporter acknowledged the ongoing global challenges in achieving gender equity in the film industry and emphasized the importance of celebrating women who are making a difference.

Mo Abudu, the British-Nigerian media entrepreneur behind EbonyLife Media, was commended for her extensive impact on African storytelling and her global partnerships with platforms like Netflix and Sony.

Her production credits include major Nollywood successes such as The Wedding Party and Òlòtūré.

She was also recognised for launching the $50 million Afro Film Fund in 2024, and for planning the unveiling of EbonyLife Place London, a cultural and entertainment center set to open by the end of the year.

Abudu’s message to young women, shared in the feature, was: “Stay focused, be authentic and find your own voice.” Her recognition reflects her unwavering commitment to promoting African narratives on the world stage.

Funke Akindele, a celebrated actress, filmmaker, and founder of the Funke Akindele Network (FAAN), was also honoured for her creative excellence and dedication to authentic storytelling.

Her 2024 blockbuster Everybody Loves Jenifa, the third installment in her hit franchise, was cited as a milestone in Nollywood’s box office history.

Akindele emphasized the importance of Nigerians controlling their own stories, saying, “It’s about owning and empowering our narrative.”

She later took to Instagram to express her gratitude, describing the recognition as deeply meaningful and a proud moment in her career.
