Josephine Nwaogu, winner of Miss Diaspora Nigeria USA 2025, says growing up in the United States while embracing her Nigerian heritage helped shape her identity and confidence. She spoke to BIODUN BUSARI about her journey and ambitions.
The law student, specialising in intellectual property law, in an interview with PUNCH, described her childhood as active and creative, filled with sports, music, and other pursuits.
She said navigating life as a Nigerian among Americans taught her resilience and pride in her culture.
“I learnt to be proud of my culture while adapting to different spaces,” she said. “There is nothing you aspire to that is not within reach. If you can dream it, you can do it.”
Winning the crown, Nwaogu said, is a responsibility. “It has given me a platform to represent the Nigerian diaspora, share our stories, and engage on culture, education, and service.” She added that the title reflects the pride of the community that shaped her.
She recently launched Roots and Wings, an education initiative aimed at mentorship and access to resources for students in Nigeria and the diaspora.
“It connects students to scholarships, tools, and opportunities to be mentored by Nigerians abroad,” she said.
On her homeland, Nwaogu said Nigerian culture continues to shape her worldview.
“There is so much power in our culture. Whether born here or abroad, we should use it to pour into Nigeria and show the value of our experiences,” she said.
She also urged young Nigerians to embrace opportunities abroad.
“Leaving the country can be positive. My parents came to the US to improve their lives, and it changed our trajectory. Such opportunities should be taken,” she said.
Since winning, Nwaogu said she has focused on bridging the diaspora and Nigeria.
“The title is not just visibility; it is about impact. I want Nigerians everywhere to feel seen, supported, and proud of our culture,” she added.
