NECO establishes new examination centre in London

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has established a new SSCE examination centre in London, United Kingdom, as part of efforts to expand access to education for Nigerians in the diaspora.

The Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, unveiled the centre in partnership with Barnfield Education Ltd (BEP Education).

He described the London location as strategic for reaching students and adult learners unable to complete secondary education abroad.

Speaking at the Education Matters Conference UK 2025, Wushishi stated that NECO aims to provide credible and accessible examinations for Nigerians living outside the country, in line with the federal government’s policy on inclusivity and global engagement.

He highlighted NECO’s ongoing transition to Computer-Based Examination (CBE) as a key strategic goal and noted that the council now operates SSCE centres in seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, with new centres pending accreditation in Egypt and Burkina Faso.

Prof. Wushishi explained that the London centre will empower the diaspora, elevate national pride, and offer economic and social benefits.

He added that NECO certificates are recognized by UK institutions such as Birmingham City University and Leeds Trinity University, and by universities in the USA, Canada, India, China, and Russia.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, in a goodwill message, commended the initiative, saying it aligns with the ministry’s mandate to provide education for every Nigerian child, including those abroad.

He described the diaspora as both a community to serve and a resource to empower.

Dr. John Ibanga, Director of BEP Education, said the new centre offers an alternative pathway for Nigerian students in the UK facing challenges in the British education system.

He noted that NECO certificates would open doors for further education and vocational advancement for both young learners and adults.
