New US visa policy: What it means for Nigerians

The United States government has announced a significant change to its visa policy for Nigerian nationals, limiting most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas to a single entry with a three-month validity period.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the US Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday.

The new policy takes immediate effect, impacting new visa applications submitted from July 8, 2025, onwards.

However, the embassy clarified that previously issued non-immigrant visas will not be affected by the new rule.

“All visas granted before July 8, 2025, will remain valid until their respective expiration dates,” the statement noted.

The embassy explained that the adjustment is part of the Department of State’s global visa reciprocity program, which is regularly reviewed and updated.

The program allows the US to align its visa policies with those of other countries, adjusting aspects like duration and number of entries.

According to the US authorities, the changes aim to uphold the integrity of the country’s immigration system and align with global security and technical standards.

“Visa policies are designed to protect the US immigration process and ensure international travel security,” the embassy stated.

The embassy also confirmed ongoing collaboration with Nigerian officials to meet these international benchmarks.

Some of the criteria include issuing secure travel documents, managing visa overstays, and sharing security and criminal data to safeguard public safety.

Despite the restrictions, the US emphasized that its relationship with Nigeria remains strong.

“The United States values its enduring partnership with Nigeria, rooted in mutual respect, shared security goals, and economic collaboration,” the statement said.

In support of ongoing reforms, the embassy acknowledged the efforts of Nigerian immigration and security agencies to align with global best practices.

Nigerian travellers were also reminded to comply with US visa conditions.

“Travellers are urged to ensure their travel documents are accurate, authentic, and up to date, and to abide by all visa regulations,” the embassy advised.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the US commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria through various exchanges.

“We remain dedicated to fostering connections with the Nigerian people through business, education, and cultural opportunities, and look forward to continued cooperation with both the public and government.”
