NFF urged to secure Argentina-born River plate star, Asuzu for Nigeria

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been advised to move quickly in securing the international commitment of 18-year-old River Plate forward, Jonathan Spiff Asuzu, amid rising interest from the Argentine Football Association.

Asuzu, who was born in Buenos Aires to a Nigerian father and an Argentine mother, has reportedly shown a strong desire to represent Nigeria at the international level, despite persistent approaches from Argentina.

Dr. Raymond Edoh, a youth advocate, described Asuzu as a standout talent and urged the NFF to ensure he is fully integrated into Nigeria’s national football program before another country claims his allegiance.

“Asuzu is one of the brightest young footballers emerging on the global scene,” Edoh said.

“It is critical for the NFF to act swiftly and ensure that we do not lose him to another nation. His commitment to Nigeria, despite having the option to play for Argentina, speaks volumes about his values and pride in his Nigerian heritage.”

The 1.87m-tall striker currently plays as a centre-forward for Argentine giants River Plate and has impressed coaches and scouts within the club’s youth system.

He has been part of the team since 2014, developing under some of the best footballing conditions in South America.

Edoh emphasized that Nigeria cannot afford to miss out on a player of Asuzu’s calibre.

He urged the NFF to extend a formal invitation to the teenager to join the national Under-20 squad and involve him in development pathways to strengthen his ties with the country.

“Inviting him to the U-20 squad and involving him in grassroots programs will not only reinforce his commitment but also show that Nigeria values its diaspora talents,” Edoh added.

“Such action would also reflect the government’s dedication to youth empowerment and the long-term growth of sports in the country.”

He also highlighted the symbolic importance of Asuzu’s identity. “Jonathan is a perfect example of cultural unity through sports. Choosing Nigeria over Argentina shows deep patriotism. He represents the new generation of dual-heritage Nigerians who are proud of their roots and willing to give back through football.”

Edoh called on the NFF to foster a more welcoming and structured system that encourages young talents with Nigerian roots abroad to play for the country.

“By creating an environment that supports and embraces these players, we can build a stronger national team and preserve Nigeria’s reputation as a hub of world-class football talent,” he said.
