NICASA condemns killing of Nigerian in Johannesburg, demands probe

The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) has condemned in the strongest terms the killing of Emeka Uzor, a Nigerian man from Enugu State, who was shot dead in Windsor, Randburg on February 8, 2026.

In a statement on Wednesday, NICASA president Frank Onyekwelu described the incident as a serious breach of human rights and called for a prompt, transparent and impartial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which eyewitnesses say involved Xolani Khumalo and his team.

“We reject in the strongest terms any act that substitutes violence for due process. No one has the right to take a life,” Onyekwelu said, adding that NICASA would exhaust diplomatic and legal channels to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

The association urged the South African Police Service and other relevant authorities to fast-track investigations and to provide clear answers to the victim’s family and the Nigerian community in South Africa.

Onyekwelu appealed for calm among Nigerians living in the country while engagements continue between NICASA, the Nigerian Consulate and South African agencies. He extended the association’s condolences to the bereaved family and reiterated NICASA’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.

The killing has heightened anxieties within the Nigerian community in South Africa and is likely to increase calls for accountability and improved protection for foreign nationals.
