NIDCOM Chair urges calm over alleged deportation of Nigerians in Ghana

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has called for calm following the circulation of a viral video showing protests in Ghana, where some citizens reportedly demanded the deportation of Nigerians from the country.

The video, which has triggered concerns among Nigerians both at home and abroad, allegedly featured Ghanaians accusing Nigerian residents of behavior that goes against local cultural norms.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NIDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, condemned the generalization and profiling of Nigerians in Ghana, stating that it was unfair to label an entire community based on the actions of a few.

“ Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves while those bad ones should be fished out to face necessary sanctions”

She noted the close historical and cultural ties between both countries and called for mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.

“Ghana and Nigeria are like siamese twins. They are brothers and in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration should continue to live in peace like brothers.

The NIDCOM boss further appealed to Nigerians residing in Ghana to remain peaceful and law-abiding, noting that the matter is being addressed diplomatically by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Minister of State, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu.

She advised anyone using inciteful words, on both sides , to desist henceforth as such statements are capable of escalating the matter.

Dabiri-Erewa also advised Nigerians to disregard the videos circulating that Nigerians’ shops and properties are being destroyed by Ghanaians. “There is no evidence to that and we must at all cost try to prevent any reprisal attacks”.

She praised Ghanaian and Nigeria High Commissioners for their efforts to control the situation, adding that the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs , has also been in touch with Ghanaian authorities and had taken some pro- active measures .

The Commission assured Nigerians that the situation is under close observation and that steps are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerian nationals in Ghana.
