NiDCOM secures release of three Nigerians held at South African airport

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has confirmed that three Nigerians earlier stranded at an airport in South Africa have been cleared to exit the country following its intervention.

The commission disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the affected individuals have already departed and are expected to arrive in Lagos on Monday morning.

NiDCOM, while welcoming their safe return, expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the incident and the issues that led to their detention at the point of entry.

According to the agency, one of the travellers had previously made offensive remarks about the South African government on social media, which reportedly placed him on a watchlist.

It added that the situation worsened when the individual was unable to justify or explain the comments during questioning by immigration officials.

The commission also blamed the growing reliance on unregulated visa agents, stating that such intermediaries often submit visa applications without the full knowledge of applicants, leading to inconsistencies during verification.

NiDCOM warned that many travellers face entry denial because they cannot defend details provided in their applications, urging Nigerians to handle visa processes personally or through credible agents.

It further advised intending travellers to ensure accuracy in their documentation, maintain a responsible online presence, and carry valid proof of purpose for their trips, while assuring continued engagement with South African authorities to prevent a recurrence.
