NIDCOM speaks on killing of Nigerian in India

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has expressed outrage over the fatal assault on a Nigerian national, Mr Emeka Christian, in Pune, India, characterising the incident as both devastating and avoidable.

In a statement released by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the commission revealed that the victim was allegedly beaten to death during a confrontation stemming from a romantic disagreement involving two compatriots, Mr Chukwudi Okafor, 31, and Mr Samuel Eze.

NiDCOM conveyed profound grief over the development and offered sympathies to the victim’s family and associates, emphasising that no household should experience such anguish.

The commission appealed to Indian authorities to conduct comprehensive and credible investigations into the matter, whilst ensuring prompt delivery of justice.

It further called on Nigerians residing overseas to demonstrate care for one another, highlighting the importance of settling disputes through peaceful means rather than resorting to aggression.

Responding to the incident, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, insisted that Nigerians must shun violence and respect legal frameworks in their host countries.

The complete statement read, “The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission is deeply distressed by the unfortunate and needless death of Emeka Christian, a Nigerian citizen in Pune, India, who was allegedly assaulted to death by two compatriots, Chukwudi Okafor, 31, and Samuel Eze, following a romantic disagreement.

“We convey our profound sympathies to the grieving family and associates during this distressing period. No household should bear such tragedy.

“NiDCOM appeals to appropriate Indian authorities to undertake exhaustive and credible investigations, guaranteeing that justice is delivered expeditiously.

“We equally call on all Nigerians abroad to consistently support one another, settle disagreements peacefully through conversation, and maintain exemplary behaviour.

“As representatives of our distinguished nation in your various locations, your conduct overseas influences Nigeria’s reputation; let us embrace solidarity, mutual regard, and adherence to the law in all circumstances.

“Violence has no justification amongst us. Collectively, we can cultivate a more cohesive and admirable diaspora community.”

The commission reiterated its appeal to Nigerians in the diaspora to prioritise fraternal responsibility, pursue peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue, and demonstrate the highest standards of deportment.
