The Federal Government has refuted claims that the Nigerian Embassy in Iran has shut down and left citizens stranded amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
In a statement released on Saturday by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government described the reports circulating online and in some media outlets as “false and misleading.”
The Ministry assured the public, especially Nigerians residing in Iran, that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran remains functional and committed to the safety and welfare of its nationals.
While routine operations at the embassy have been disrupted due to ongoing bombings in Tehran, the staff continue to work remotely to provide consular support.
In a proactive move, the Nigerian government has intensified diplomatic efforts to facilitate the safe evacuation of citizens.
Talks with the Republic of Armenia have reportedly reached an advanced stage, with a plan for safe passage through Yerevan being finalised.
The Ministry confirmed that the Nigerian Chargé d’Affaires in Tehran, Dr. Abdulrasheed Omar Lawal, recently met with Armenia’s Acting Director for Middle East and Africa, Mr. Levon Petrosyan, to formally request assistance with evacuation efforts.
Describing Armenia’s response as “compassionate,” the Ministry praised the gesture as an example of international solidarity and humanitarian cooperation in times of crisis.
“Nigeria deeply appreciates the willingness of Armenia to assist in ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens caught in this distressing situation,” the statement read.
The Ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s strong diplomatic ties with Armenia and expressed optimism about deepening bilateral relations built on mutual respect and shared values.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government is coordinating with Armenian authorities and other international partners to ensure a smooth and safe evacuation process.
“Nigerians currently in Iran and in need of assistance are urged to contact the Embassy through emergency lines provided: Mr. Esson Anzaku (+98 939 321 6872) and Abutalib (+98 902 419 9018). They can also reach out via email at nigeria.tehran@mfa.gov.ng, anzakuesson02@gmail.com, or lawshed@yahoo.com.
“Citizens are encouraged to stay connected with designated community coordinators and join the Nigerian community group on the Iranian messaging platform Eitaa for real-time updates.
The Ministry concluded by reaffirming its commitment to monitoring the evolving situation closely and taking all necessary steps to protect the lives and welfare of Nigerians abroad.
