Nigeria urges US to rethink new visa policy

The Federal Government has called on the United States to review its recent decision to enforce stricter visa rules on Nigerian citizens, describing the move as unfair and inconsistent with the long-standing relationship between both countries.

In a statement released on Wednesday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian government said it was concerned about the changes, which significantly reduce the validity period of certain non-immigrant visas to just three months and limit them to a single entry.

The affected visa categories include the B1/B2 (business and tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) classes.

“The Federal Government views this development with concern and keen interest, particularly given the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between our two countries,” the statement read.

Diaspora NG reports that the U.S. State Department had earlier announced adjustments to its visa reciprocity arrangement with Nigeria, citing unspecified policy considerations.

However, the Nigerian government said the decision seemed to undermine the principles of fairness, equity, and mutual respect that should govern diplomatic relations between friendly nations.

According to the statement, the policy change could negatively impact Nigerian students pursuing education in the U.S., business professionals, and families wishing to visit relatives.

The government further expressed worry that the restriction could disrupt long-established educational and cultural exchanges, which have been central to the relationship between both countries.

“While we recognize the sovereign right of every nation to formulate its immigration policies, we urge the United States to reconsider this measure in the spirit of partnership and shared global responsibilities,” the statement added.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed that talks are ongoing with American officials to find a solution that better reflects the mutual interests of both nations.

It reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining a balanced and respectful bilateral relationship with the United States.
